Kylie’s Read-a-thon

Year 4 student Kylie Sampson found a way to make a difference

Earlier this year, Year 4 Elsternwick student Kylie Sampson saw the devastation caused by the recent flooding in New South Wales and Queensland on television and decided she needed to help the local library, which had lost all of their resources to water damage.

Damage

She designed a Read-a-thon and challenged the students from Prep to Year 4 to seek sponsorship for every book they read over the Term 1 holiday break. She organised a reading log and sponsorship form to be distributed to all students and promoted the Read-a-thon at assembly and in classroom visits. The students were inspired to know that by reading lots of books, they would not only improve their reading, but their action would provide resources such as books, puzzles and audiobooks for the Lismore Library

The response from the students was enormous. They raised $5,205.80, all of which has been sent to support the redevelopment of the Lismore Library.

Kylie shared this achievement with Lismore librarian Michael Lewis via video conference, and he spoke of the experience and the redevelopment process they are now working through. Kylie was very proud of her efforts and the contribution our Junior School students made to this fundraiser.

Kylie’s action illustrates the change our students at Wesley strive for; she identified a problem and sought a way to actively make a difference. We’ll watch with interest over the coming months as the communities impacted by flooding rebuild their lives and feel very satisfied that students at Wesley College played a part in supporting them.
