OW recognised on Roll of Honour
The death of Roy Hector Jones (OW1907) in a Melbourne hospital in 1921 has recently been recognised by the Australian War Memorial to have been war related and his name is now included on newly cast panels for the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
Roy Hector Jones (OW1907) died in a Melbourne hospital in early 1921 and was buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery. He joined 24th Battalion in May 1915 as a Second Lieutenant and was promoted to Lieutenant on 26 August at Gallipoli. His brother, Leslie Theophilus Jones (7th Battalion) was killed at Lone Pine on 8 August 1915.
Roy saw service in France, being promoted to the rank of Captain in November 1916. Between February and June 1917 he was attached to a training battalion in England before returning to 24th Battalion. He received a gunshot wound to the right side of his face on 9 October 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres. After recovery time in England, he returned to his unit in France on 8 February, but was sent to England on 22 April for return to Australia, which he did on the Ruahine on 6 July 1918.
Thanks to the dedication of historian and former Vice President of Wesley College Council, Philip Powell (OW1973), we have succeeded in getting the Australian War Memorial to acknowledge his death as war related and his name is included on newly cast panels for the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
