OW Cross Country

Dave Nicholson (OW 1991) being presented with the Ken Orchard (OW1937) trophy by Ken’s niece, Elizabeth Orchard (Elsternwick MLC 1966)

The OW Cross Country club competes against ten other APS collegian clubs in the Associated Public Schools Old Collegians Amateur Athletic Association (APSOC).

The 2022 season commenced in April with a 5km race at Scotch College and will conclude at Xavier Burke Hall in September with 8km along the Yarra.

In between, there will be various road and cross-country events held around Melbourne, with distances ranging from 3.8km to 21km. All runs cater to occasional runners and serious competitors alike.

AdamAt the 2022 season mid-point, OW has already had some great results, with David Nicholson (OW1991) winning the handicap event at the 81st running of the Orchard 10km at Albert Park. The Orchard 10km is the OW-hosted event named in memory of Ken Orchard (OW1937), Secretary of the OW club who lost his life in air operations off Darwin in 1942. Another highlight of this season was Adam Pyke (OW2013) winning the McPhail 8km at Yarra Bend Park, smashing the course record that has stood since 2006.

Collegians X Hockey

It is great that after two years, we are finally getting some normality back into our lives.

Just like other clubs and sports, it has been a tough year but it's wonderful to see both familiar and new faces down at the club enjoying their hockey.

The end of another winter season is approaching, but that doesn't mean the club goes into hibernation.

At the end of August, we turn our attention to our social events, most importantly, our presentation night, before hockey kicks-off once again as we play hockey all year round, with teams in both summer and winter competitions.

For those who have only ever played winter hockey, summer hockey is fantastic fun and a great opportunity to stay fit and keep up your skills. As always, anyone wanting to have a run is welcome and we have various standards available.

We train at Monash Clayton on Wednesday nights from 7pm – 8:30pm.

For more information, email secretary@collegiansx.com or call Scott Booth (OW1985) on 0418 883 212.

Cato Golf

Cato GolfThe 93rd Women’s Interschool Golf Competition was held on 21 March at Commonwealth Golf Club. Despite being very hot and humid, it was a wonderful day with friends from other schools and golf clubs enjoying catching up. Cato performed well, ending mid-field on the leader board, despite having two players recovering from injury. Maybe next year will be our year!

The annual Cato Golf Day will be held on Friday 2 September at Riversdale Golf Club. We encourage Cato Collegians to join us for a casual day of golf and lunch. It would be great to see more golfers participating in this special event.

To register your interest, please contact, Debbie Catchlove (Cato MLC 1974) on 0425 711 386 or email dcatchlove@ hotmail.com

OW Cricket Club after defeating Old Caulfield

Cricket Club

After a successful 2021/22 season, the Old Wesley Cricket Club (OWCC) are looking forward to another year of competition. Following a loss in the grand final last season, we are keen to get back into the whites and baggy purples to bring home the premiership.

While winning matches is great, we are most excited to be developing a core group of regular players to develop the club’s culture: a fun, inclusive team that above all else, enjoys and respects the game and its players.

With training once a week followed by a meal at our sponsored venue, the College Lawn Hotel, our 40-over games are played on Sunday afternoons at some of Melbourne’s premium grounds.

If you are interested in playing on some beautiful turf wickets with a great group of players, contact captain Rick Morris (OW2004) on 0438 081 886.

Dust off the bat, roll the arm over and come and support OWCC in bringing home the premiership. Go Lions!

Sometimes on a cold winter’s morning, it can be difficult to get out of a warm bed. It’s made a lot easier when you have a routine established with friends and the Alan Mitchell Rowing Club provides both the equipment and the gentle nudge of a welcoming group to build fitness and friendship.

All members of the Wesley community are invited to get involved in social and/or competitive Masters rowing. The recently renovated club rooms have great facilities and opportunities for both land training and rowing on the water.

If you are interested in learning to row or want to re-engage with the sport, please contact ana.mccloskey@gmail.com for an introduction to the club and clubrooms.

The Collegians Women’s Reserves side has been enjoying a blistering 2022 season and were cheered off the ground after a recent win.

Collegians Football Club

MID SEASON REVIEW
At the halfway mark of the year, it’s been an up and down start for Collegians.

The senior men started really well then had a form slump but won their last match to be at four wins and five losses. The senior women lost their first couple then had a great winning streak, but lost their last game to be five wins and four losses. The complete opposite to the men, but with one more win. The women sit in third place and the men in seventh place.

JoshThe men’s reserves are really having a tough time of it with just one win and a draw to their name. Playing numbers and a lack of depth are hurting them. The women’s reserves are sitting on top of the ladder undefeated and with a sizable percentage

Our Thirds and Under 19 men’s teams started the year slowly but are now hitting some great form, and both sides look capable of playing finals later in the year.

We have just replaced our lights after eight years at a cost of $25,000 and we are looking for donations to our sporting equipment fund with The Australian Sports Foundation. All donations to this fund are tax deductible.

If you are interested in getting involved in either our men’s or women’s programs, please contact rnancarrow@iprimus.com.au or 0412 687 430 to join Collegians as a player, volunteer or sponsor.

OWCA Bowls

OWCA BowlsThe OWCA Bowls season is set to commence in September 2022 with our annual match against the West Brighton Club. For the past two years, we have not been able to conduct this event due to Covid but we are hoping that we can return to our normal schedule of games this year.

OWCA Bowls finished last season on a high in equal second position, but were relegated to third on percentage. The result is the best we have had for several years. Xavier won the event by one point from Old Carey and OWCA. We hope to claim the prize in 2023.

Above: OWCA Bowls Team 2022 with OWCA President Kate Evans (OW1998)

It was fabulous to have our OWCA President Kate Evans (OW1998) with us for the luncheon at the Glen Waverley Bowling Club. The luncheon is a great time to catch up on what has been happening over the past year. Kate inspired our team, as we won all our matches in the afternoon to almost finish winners on the day.

On a sad note, we have lost one of our regular players in Douglas Meagher (OW1958). Doug was a valued player and will be sorely missed by his fellow OWCA players. On behalf of OWCA Bowls, I would like to pass on our sympathy and prayerful thoughts to Doug’s family.

We are always looking for new blood to boost the ranks as we are not getting any younger. If you would like to join us, please contact me through the OWCA office or on 0403 023 288.
