Bequests to support scholarships and bursaries are a real endorsement of the value of a Wesley College education

Over the challenging past few months, we have been very encouraged by the number of new members of the Sapere Aude Bequest Society who have confirmed a bequest to the College, adding to those mentioned in the April edition of Lion.

Our membership is now more than 270 and growing. The support for scholarships and bursaries is a real endorsement of the value of a Wesley College education and its transformative impact on our students.

Of particular note is a bequest from long-standing donor and Society member, John Hearnes (OW1951), a popular and respected member of our community who sadly died last year. John entered Wesley College in 1944 and was proud that his name on the school roll followed that of Geoffrey Blainey (OW1947), numbers 9595 and 9596 respectively. He enjoyed his time at Wesley and often recalled a favourite teacher, Jack Kroger, a man he and many others revered. He forged strong and enduring friendships at school.

As an OW, John was very active, enjoying the Tall Ships lunches, Founders’ Day Dinners and OWCA events and reunions. His bequest will be fittingly directed to scholarships, which goes to the very core of Wesley College’s mission – education.
